Eugene Field Memorial  -  Edward Francis McCartan
1922

Location: Lincoln Park Zoo

Erected in 1922, by school children and citizens, aided by the B.F. Ferguson Fund.

Eugene Field was best known from his children's poetry and humorous essays. This memorial has a statue of the "Dream Lady" from his poem, "Rock-a-by-Lady"...




















The rectangular stone base has relief sculptures, from his poems..

Have you ever heard of the sugar plum tree.
Tis a mearvel of great renown
It blooms on the shore of lollipop sea
In the garden of shut-eye town ..

into a sea of dew ...

On both sides of the stone base, there are relief panels, above the drinking fountains, which are of children's heights.. These have imagery from the poems..

I have a photo of my father holding me in front of the Dream Lady Angel, I see no statue of the children in my picture. Were the children added after 1963? SJH
